The National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party, Mr. Lord Commey, has described the recent wrangling that have erupted among the executives in the party as unfortunate and a cause of worry to the party as a whole.
According to him even though the party is totally united and cohesive, the problem of wrangling could be attributed to the longest chapter in the constitution of the NPP which talks about discipline and measures to resolve conflicts instead of resorting to court action. He said these were overlooked when they were in the opposition as they were struggling against the common” enemy” have the NDC out of power.
Mr. Commey, who disclosed this to Chronicle in an exclusive interview, indicated that as a result of the rate of which these problems are on the increase and a subject of public discussion, the party is taking a second look at them to identify the problems. He said he was happy that these problems are not a fight over policy direction, adding that instead there are petty squabbles and individual problems which make members to bare teeth against each other. He said it would be dangerous if there were disagreements over policy direction, which could end up splitting the party.
Mr. Commey indicated that the party is keen on administering the purpose for which it was voted to power, adding that there is the need to have a new NPP to explain the party’s procedures that any aggrieved person could go through, instead of resorting to court action as stipulated in the longest chapter in the constitution sundry to condemn such habit. According to the national organiser, the National Steering Committee is seriously putting measures together to educate all the party executives at various constituencies to curb party indiscipline.
Mr. Commey said, “The NPP of yester-years in opposition for long a time should be different from NPP that is in power today.” He urged members to forge ahead and educate themselves on the provisions in the party constitution, adding that printing of party cards must be properly co-ordinated and managed.
Mr. Commey reiterated that the introduction of the new identity cards is to discern between party faithful and supporters, adding that the party has a thousand and one well-wishers, sympathizers and those who voted for the NPP because they believed in the manifesto. He noted: “if you are in power, you have a lot of people coming in from different directions, some to cause confusion, some have their personal ambitions.”
