The journey by foot from Wli Afegame to Wli Todzi is one I have made a number of times. I feel this writer left out some of the best bits and concentrated on the difficulties.
The foot journey may be difficult but it is the dream of lovers of nature and adventurers. Mountaineers may like it but it will not be much of a challenge to them. The foot journey takes you past the Agumatsa Waterfalls, the tallest and most beautiful all year round waterfall in Ghana. At various parts of the journey, you'll see the waterfall from different angles gushing downwards. It's one of the most beautiful natural sites in Ghana!!!
It's a great pity that commercial activity is destroying the area. The forest is supposed to be a sanctuary as it rightly should be but we Ghanaians like to destroy some of the very best things we have. The forest contains se of the rarest and most beautiful butterflies in the world. It is also a sanctuary for fruit eating bats that are harmless to human beings. In the 60s and 70s, these bats could be found in their millions. When they rose up en mass in the air, you could not see the clouds. They settled on the trees and were so many and heavy on the trees that even huge branches broke down under their weight. But now human activity has not only pushed these bats farther into the forests, their numbers have been considerably reduced! Bat meat is a delicacy for the people and the creatures are being hunted to extinction. The whole ecology of the forest is being destroyed and only lip service paid to preservation. It's a pity indeed especially when you come to Europe and America and see the efforts these people make to preserve their things.
The Agumatsa Falls is now a tourist attraction from both Ghana and Togo. This means the pristine nature of the area is disappearing as Africans cast plastic containers and cans all over the place. I know the white visitors don't do that because I live in Europe and know they don't do that.
As for Wli-Todzi, you'll say a big hmmmm if you mention that name. It's a very beautiful mountain hideout at high altitude. The air is clean and very cool. There are no mosquitoes. The beer is chilled without refrigeration. But this hideaway status is also the village's doom. A road to the area will cost a lot apart from being an engineering nightmare. The people themselves have tried to do something about the feeder road but they are few and poor. There are not many Wli Todzians living abroad because there are not many Wli Todzians at all. Apart from its clean air and beauty, Wli Todzi offers no resources to the rest of the country. It does not even have many votes for the politicians to struggle for. So Wli todzi's lot is neglect, neglect and still more neglect. ALL the governments in Ghana, even from before independence, have neglected this outpost.
But the village people love their ancestral home. They are struggling as best as they can - on their own.
The JoyFm documentary is still on the Internet. There's also something from a few years ago on YouTube.

Interesting contribution. The question is what would the Government do to assist them or at least make the place a tourist attraction, but of course, without destroying the enviroment as we are presently doing to Wli Wterfalls area?? Ghana is a blessed country but we are destroying it and would eventuially leave nothing behind for our grand children to cheer about. Thanks to both the writer and the contributor, Kwesi. Very interesting. I had four years ago took a friend tourist from America to Wli Waterfalls and he so much loved it and the surroundings. I hope at that time they have not started destroying the area with plastic bottles, plastic bags, etc.
