A Ghanaian politician went to the US to visit his counterpart. When the
senator invited him home for dinner, the minister was very impressed
by the lavish mansion, grounds and the costly furnishings. He asked
"How can you afford all this on a meager senator's salary?"
The senator smiled knowingly and took him to the window.
"Can you see the river?"
"Yes"
"Can you see the bridge over it?"
"Of course", said the minister.
"10 percent", said the senator smugly.
Some time later, he had occasion to pay a return visit. The Ghanaian
minister lavished all hospitality on him. When they came to his house, the American was stunned by the huge palace the minister had
built, glittering with precious art, hundreds of servants etc. etc.
"How can you possibly afford this, on a salary in Cedis?', he asked.
The minister called him to the window.
"See the river over there?"
"Sure", cried the senator.
"Can you see the bridge over it?"
The senator looked, was confused, peered closely and said -
"No, I don't see any bridge."
"100 percent", said the minister !!

When we talk of a hospital, are we talking just about the standing walls or inclusive of the equipments necessary to operate a modern hospital?I will be suprised if Mr Dangote's $12.38 million devepoment is classified a hospital anywhere outside Nigeria/Africa. I live in a city where a new hospital has just been completed at a cost of more than $10 billion dollars. That is a hospital with state of the art equipment. In my view, the $306 mill will only provide a modest upgrade to a 400 room hospital.
Why do we poilticize everything in Ghana, and what methodology did AFAG use in their cost analysis?

I can agree with you if you say the process for awarding the contract was not transparent and need a review. What i am reading, though,is about costs and the allegation that the nation is going to lose $85 millions! How did AFAG come to that conclusion? Anybody say whatever they wanted but sometimes some substantion may be necessary. I dont think they have! You get what you pay for, and I dont see how $305 million is going to make a 400 bed hospital to rank among mdern hospitals around the world.

What AFAG is talking about is value for money. Was the project put out for tender? Without competive bidding how do you know the price is right. Bouygues Bartiment International is responsible for the design, construction, procurement and installation of equipment for the rehabilitation of the Ridge hospital. Who is going to supervise them to ensure quality of work, materials used, equipment? Single precurement process is always infected with corruption.
Mr President says his government does not borrow to drink. May be it is true. But what he cannot dispute is that his government borrows to waste.

What is really distressing is our politicians making blanket statements about costs and technology on our hospitals, when they have zero knowledge and details about the subject matter. As soon as they can't reconcile the numbers in their little brains, they use words like "corruption" in order to call attention for their own political gains. Not every hospital in Africa has the same cost and if we, as an emerging country, want to excel for the benefit of our people, we must invest wisely and sufficiently for the betterment of our nation. Ridge Hospital should be the best in the region, and that will cost more than the other low level facilities that we've poured millions into!
