Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Joseph Yammin, has labeled the incumbent General Secretary for the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), who is also vying to be retained by the party’s delegates, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, as an ‘opportunist’.

He described the NPP chief scribe, also known as ‘Sir John,’ as “someone who doesn’t wait for a grand opportunity to pass by” and always tries to “transform events to exploitable situations”.

He opined that Sir John’s suspension of his campaign in solidarity with Kwabena Agyepong who was involved in a near fatal accident on his way to Kumasi ahead of the party’s upcoming National Executive Delegates conference in Tamale was just a “camouflage”.

“His (Sir John’s) presence at the hospital was not to show love, rather to take advantage of his (Kwabena Agyepong) accident to campaign. The biggest campaign in the world is what Sir John did,” he said.

In a statement signed by Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie, the NPP Chief Scribe said “Whilst on a campaign tour [of the] Greater Accra Region this afternoon ahead of Saturday’s National Delegates conference, I heard the sad news of an accident involving my compatriot, Kwabena Agyepong, on the Accra-Nsawam road.

“…I have decided to suspend immediately the rest of my campaign tour until further notice. I am also proceeding to the 37 Military Hospital to visit Kwabena where, I am told, he is receiving treatment. I wish him and all those involved in the accident a speedy recovery”.

But speaking on Asempa FM, Hon. Yamin opined Sir John sought to take advantage of the situation to canvas for votes rather than to show love.

“Sir John was not touring anywhere…he is not campaigning anywhere,” he stated.

Touching on the chances of the incumbent in the race for General Secretary, Joseph Yammin opined that Sir John will retain his position as the party's scribe, adding that his massive grassroots support gives him an advantage over the other contenders in the race.

“Sir John is 100 times better than the other aspirants because his relationship with the grassroots makes him the number one contender…the people at the grassroots have benefitted from Sir John and they will reward him by voting for him in Tamale…Sir John is unmatched and will do a better job than the other contenders,” he stated
