The author is perhaps the only stranger in Jerusalem, as it were, who did not see the poignant, terrifying images of Brazilian military armored vehicles and heavily armed soldiers who descended heavily on the favelas where the majority of Afro-Brazilians live. Some of these slum neighbourhoods have even been razed down to make way for fancy infrastructure for the games. The mostly black inhabitants have been displaced without any re-settlement or financial assistance to acquire new residence.
Go to Haiti and see how the Brazilian troops sent under UN auspices have been raping young girls and brutalizing the Haitian people. Pele is no role model for any black person in Brazil or anywhere else. This shameless sellout publicly denied that there was racism in European football because all the teams had black players! It's very suspicious for Pele to deny racism when his personal preference for everything is white, marrying white women twice, going out with a Japanese girlfriend but never a black woman. All his kids have followed his example too. And that's Brazil for you where there is even a code for blacks not wanted when ads indicate "fine appearance" wanted. Go to Bahia where most blacks are and yet see all political, administrative and economic power is in the hands of whites and see how poor the black people are also. Brazil is a racial myth and an image fraud.
