The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) has kick-start the Borteyman affordable housing project with 37 contractors moved to site for four months after government handed over the project.

Mrs Eva Amegashie, SSNIT Head of Corporate Affairs said 20 more contractors are expected to move to the site in due course.

“Currently, there are about 37 contractors on site with a workforce of 453, who commenced work between June and July,” she said

The estimated completion period would vary due to the various stages of perfection with a maximum execution period of 18 months for each stage, Mrs Amegashie told journalists during a visit to the site.

Joseph Allotey Kofi, Site Engineer, said the site is made up of 104 blocks totalling 1,536 apartments consisting 744 one-bedroom and 792 two-bedroom apartments.

He said each block is four-storey high, a sewage treatment plant made available while four power transformers have been installed.

The affordable projects commenced in 2005 but were stalled in 2009 due to lack of funds and was handed over to SSNIT in March 2014 after a site audit.

It is envisaged that after completion the houses would be sold to the public at affordable rate.

The Trust is also undertaking similar projects in Asokore-Mampong in the Ashanti Region, Koforidua in the Eastern Region, Tamale in the Northern region and Wa in the Upper West Region.
