Mr. Peter Nanfuri, Inspector-General of Police, has advised police personnel to eschew negative tendencies that tarnish the image of the service. A statement in Koforidua signed by Chief Inspector Jonathan Kwame Abban, Eastern Regional police Public Relations Officer, said the IGP was addressing 85 Officers and men at the Regional Police Headquarters at Koforidua after inspecting police projects at Nsawam and Koforidua. The IGP explained that negative practices such as bribery and corruption, debt collection by some policemen and keeping suspects custody for more than the stipulated 48 hours for minor offences should cease forthwith. This will bring the public closer to the police to enhance their work. The IGP said the 48 hours permitted by law to keep suspects in custody include weekends and advised the personnel to abide by the constitutional provisions to avoid breaching the law. The inspector-general commended the police task force in Accra for ensuring sanity in the streets of the capital. Both vehicular and human traffic in the city have eased considerably, urging police personnel in the other regions to emulate them. The police administration will recognise and reward hardworking personnel to boost their morale. He urged them to work harder to maintain law and order and praised the State Construction Company Limited for satisfactorily rehabilitating the Eastern Regional Police Hospital at Koforidua.
