The Upper East Region needs food aid to save about 30 to 40 percent of its population which is facing acute food shortage. This follows the erratic rainfall pattern in the area last year which affected food production. According to a report received by the GNA from the ministry of food and agriculture, it is important that cereals are moved, especially in the lean season from the surplus of the Eastern, Ashanti, Brong Ahafo to alleviate the plight of the people of the Upper East. The report said the region recorded a total cereal deficit of 14,000 tonnes. Maize recorded a deficit of 32,870 tonnes and millet was 50,340 tonnes. Rice and sorghum, however, showed surpluses of 35,580 tonnes and 31,140 tonnes.
