The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG) has appealed to the Government to hand over the management of mission schools to the missions.
The Reverend Kofi Amfo Akonnor, Asante Presbytery Chairperson, said at the Presbytery’s New Year School in Kumasi that the leadership had officially written to the Government, explaining why the missions wanted to run their schools.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the way things had been handled since government assumed control over the management of Presbyterian schools under a partnership agreement some years ago.
He said government’s reluctance to maintain the existing infrastructure and add to the structures, non-involvement of regional managers in the postings of teachers and the decline of Presbyterian values in the training of pupils and students was worrying.
Rev Akonnor said the church had the capacity to recruit and pay its own teachers, manage and keep its classroom blocks and other facilities in proper shape without the involvement of the state.
He encouraged the catechists and presbyters to take keen interest in the training programmes to build the needed competencies and capacity in organisational leadership.
He said they should also provide the General Assembly with data on all generational groups in the church for effective planning to sustain the growth of Presbyterianism.
The New Year School is an annual event held by the Presbytery to assess its performance and discuss ways to help strengthen internal structures.
