IUU fishing (illegal fishing by industrial fish trawlers) can safely be considered the bigger immediate threat to Ghana's maritime ecosystem and thus fishermen's incomes and Ghanaian food security, as long as no Oil Spills occur. 500m radius around the rigs is not that big, it seems to me, as to endanger a lot of fishers' income, whereas illegal fish trawlers, along with pollution, actually devastate the habitats and populations of the maritime ecosystem.
Last year Ghana announced that their Navy was easily capable of detecting and deflecting any illegal intrusions into Ghana's maritime dominion, such as attempts at piracy.
Was that just an exaggeration, or are certain Ghanaian authorities complicit in bribedly turning a blind eye on large-scale illegal fishing exploitation and not sending the Navy?
