Association of African Universities granted diplomatic status

Mon, 23 Feb 1998 Source: --

The government today granted formal diplomatic status to the Association of African Universities. The agreement to that effect was signed by Mr. James Victor Gbeho, Foreign Minister, and Professor Narciso Matos, Secretary General of the Association. Mr. Gbeho said the government is happy to grant diplomatic status to the association because of the useful role universities play in Africa. Mr. Gbeho said the bottom line in democracy is informed choice and if there is no way to pass on information for the right choices to be made, then it would be difficult for democracy to thrive. Mr. Gbeho said we have to do everything in our power to improve education for research and other activities on the continent to be carried out. Prof. Matos thanked the government for the honor done to the Association and its support since the association was founded in 1967 in Morocco. He said membership has grown from 37 to 160 and its main thrust is to hold dialogue with governments on burning issues and promote exchange programmes between members. JOY FM
