Fear Grips NDC Over By-election

Mon, 14 Apr 2003 Source: Daily Guide

The Central Regional Secretary of the NDC, Light Koomson has advised the party hierarchy in Accra to pull out of the upcoming by-election in the Amenfi West constituency. The country’s largest opposition party has so far lost 5 by-elections to the ruling NPP.

In a statement issued in Cape Coast, Mr Koomson alleged that the ruling NPP unleashed massive fraud and unbridled violence coupled with the shameful abuse if incumbency to win the Gomoa East seat.

According to Mr Koomson, he believes that similar tricks will be employed by the NPP in the Amenfi West by-election, thus rendering ineffective, any effort put in by the NDC, hence the need to pull out of the elections before it is too late.

Mr Light Koomson claimed in his statement that electrification projects were hastily implemented right on the election day in some communities in Gomoa East. The electrification project, according to him was completed and lights put on for the first time on voting day. This act, the NDC man claimed, contributed to a lot in luring voters to vote for the NPP instead of NDC.

''It is based on the above acts that we call on the leadership of the NDC to boycott the forthcoming by-election at Amenfi West'' Mr Koomson added.

The Amenfi West seat became vacant following the resignation of the NDC MP for the area, Abraham Kofi Asante.
