The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is cashing in on the internal wrangling within the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rally Ghanaians to reject the two major political parties in Ghana come the 2016 elections.
The Upper East regional chairman of the NPP Adams Mahama died on Thursday having suffered an acid attack on him the night before by an unknown assailant.
Addressing the media in Accra, Friday, the PPP Chairman Nii Allotey Brew Hammond condemned the act, describing it as barbaric and uncalled for.
He therefore accused both the NPP and NDC of institutionalising violence in the country’s political landscape.
“The use of violence by NDC and NPP to settle intra and inter-party disputes, most often with the full approval of their leaders; can be traced to the nation’s governance system of “winner takes all” which makes government sweet and opposition bitter,” Hammond noted.
Hammond went further to caution Ghanaians against leaving the running of the country in the hands of the two parties he described as “evils”.
“With the poor performance of the current NDC administration ahead of the 2016 elections, a careful analysis of the posture and utterances of the NPP points to the erroneous belief that the electorate would automatically give them the mandate as the lesser of the two evils, which seems to be fuelling the desire of the factions within the party to state their claims before power arrives.
“The PPP is duty bound as the credible alternative to the NDC and NPP to caution Ghanaians against retaining the equally violent, non-performing NDC or returning the violent power-drunk NPP to power in the 2016 elections,” Hammond stated.
He warned: “The two evils must be rejected and avoided like plagues if Ghana is to see peace as a result of good governance which translates into sustainable development and wellbeing of her people”.
