The deputy Executive Director of the Ghana Tourist Board, Madam Regina Serwaa Kpanga, has said that Ghana's tourism growth rate has since 1995 been double the world annual tourism rate.
The world annual tourism growth rate is four per cent, while Ghana's rate is eight per cent. Madam Kpanga said this at a day's seminar in Accra on tourism potentials of Gbidokor in the Volta region. Gbidokor is a union of the people of Peki and Hohoe traditional areas, who are believed to be the same people but settled at different places on their migration to Ghana.
The two traditional areas, although under different districts, have decided to explore the tourism potentials in their areas, so as to improve the living conditions of the people. Madam Kpanga said in 1995 567 million arrivals were received throughout the world, while total receipts amounted to $372 billion.
Madam Kpanga said if tourism in the area of "liberated slaves home coming" is maintained at its present rate or even increased, Ghana could become the Mecca for slave descendants.She said the tourist potential of Peki in the Volta region could be developed for German tourists, as the town was the first point of call for German missionary work in Ghana and Togo.
