Dude wake up. All words that have no local equivalent. Languages can be developed. Why don't you check out Tanzania (Swahili) China, Malaysia etc. They have developed their language in the last 50-60 years coining new words and adopting others, it is hard work but not impossible!! This kind of research and development was in progress at GIL Ajumako until the overthrow of Nkrumah in 1966. WE COULD ALWAYS ADOPT SWAHILI IF WE HAD ANY SENSE!!

Why can't we Africans cure this cancerous colonial mentality and and make a start at least?
The bible and the Koran have all been translated into Twi, Ewe, Dagbani, Gonja and many other Ghanaian languages and there are no complaints so why can't we begin to look at "photosynthesis" in a contextual way without losing its meaning in any Ghanaian language?

If GHA want it changed to local language then they contact us Phoenicians and linguists this would be solved no big deal. Those who are one- legged in linguistics, should at least hold their horses .

I will first of all advise Joshua to be optimistic and not pesimistic about Ghana and for that matter, Africa.
Does Joshua know that all those so-called English Words he listed are originally not from English Language?
Doesn't he know that those words were borrowed from Greek, Lartin, Arabic etc..?
In any case, countries like Sigapore, Korea, Malaysia etc dumped the English Language and concentrated on their local language and look at how they are developing...

The meaning of pump in dagbani is pirigu
Pump if it's verb to pump sth it's piri, eg. mborimi ni n piri ta ya.
If its noun it's pirigu, meaning sth use to inflate or add air into sth.
The piri or pirigu relate to all things involving adding air to sth eg. lorry tire, bike, forcing one tummy to move up and down by blowing some air.
The idea of making our methods of instruction in our local languages is in the right direction.
In 21 st era, we have many Approaches in teaching now. Eg, the famous one called-Grammar Translation Method. This approach is what all non native speaking countries of English adopt.
This method is simply by translating words into local dialects, less communication and practice grammar.
Another method is Emersion practice even in America. This is to explain everything learners learn by using the L1(mother-tongue)
So ,all these approaches in teaching is encouraging using local dialects.
We plead with those who are not experts in linguistics to talk small.

Its very sad when we Ghanaians post things in English on social network such as face book, whatsapp, Instagram etc. We must at least admonish every student to learn our local language as a subjet up to the SHS level
