The General Secretary of the People’s National Convention (PNC) has hinted of championing a crusade for the prosecution of dismissed Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) Lauretta Vivian Lamptey.
He contends that dismissing her is not enough considering the amount of money lost to the state as a result of her profligate spending for hotel accommodation while in office as CHRAJ boss.
“Letting her off the hook will mean that any public official can loot and cause financial loss to the state and get away with it because the worse he/she can always get is dismissal,” he asserted.
Speaking on the Ultimate Breakfast Show, Mornah observed that government dismissing Madam Lamptey from her position is not enough manifestation of its commitment to fighting corruption in the country and insist she must face the law to serve as a deterrent to other state officials.
“The vulgarity of state officials in looting, mismanaging and collapsing state institutions in the country must be put to check by ensuring that these individuals are pursued to the fullest and must account for their misapplication and maladministration. Culprits must be punished and properties confiscated to offset the huge debts they might have plunged the state into,” he suggested.
He observed that it was always the norm in Ghana for public officials to loot and when they are caught and sacked, they happily go home to enjoy their booty threatening to pursue the dismissed CHRAJ boss until she is prosecuted by the state based on adverse findings against her.
“I am still consulting with my lawyer to weigh the legal opportunities available to ensure that the matter is thoroughly dealt with by state prosecutors,” he disclosed.
President John Mahama it will be recalled yesterday removed Lamptey from office as Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) based on the recommendations of a committee set up by the Chief Justice to investigate the conduct of the commissioner for misappropriating public funds.
The committee following a petition submitted against Madam Lamptey concluded that the former CHRAJ boss was unfit to hold the position of Commissioner for Human Rights and Administrative Justice.
She was alleged to have spent about GH¢182,000 to renovate her official residence.
