Prof Mills says only NDC can resurrect economy

Ashaiman, July 18, GNA - Professor John Evans Atta Mills, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer, said it would require an NDC government to resurrect the country's economy, which the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had thrown into limbo. Speaking at a meeting with NDC supporters at Ashaiman on Thursday, he said ''poverty has engulfed the ordinary man and the NPP government has no vision to reverse the trend.''

Prof Mills said the NDC would continue to make the ruling government aware that it had failed to fulfil its numerous electoral promises. He accused the government of insincerity saying that ''it does not speak the truth.'' Prof Mills told the party supporters: ''we need peace and unity within the party to solve the problems that confronted the party in the last elections that led to our loosing the seat." He said while their parliamentary primaries should be keenly contested to select acceptable candidates to represent the NDC, this should be done without rancour.

Mr Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, National campaign coordinator of the party, said it was the aim of the NPP government when it took power in 2001 to "kill" the NDC just as the Progress Party (PP) did to the Convention People's Party (CPP) through smear campaign and accusations of embezzlement and corruption. ''NPP made it look like NDC depleted the national coffers yet on their assumption of office they were able to mobilise billions of cedis to renovate the Vice President's residence and bungalows of ministers,'' he said.

Mr Alfred Agbesi and Mr Franklin Aheto, former Member of Parliament (MP) for Ashaiman, said Ghanaians voted for the NPP because they yearned for change but their hopes had been turned upside down. ''People in government are enriching themselves through the award of dubious contracts and other evil things.'' Among those who accompanied Prof Mills were Nii Armah Ashietey, former Tema Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, MP for Wenchi West and Mr Charles Agbenaza, MP for Ketu South.
