Kwamo (Ashanti), 7 Dec. '98 - An assemblyman has denied that district assemblies give cash to members for the execution of projects in their electoral areas. . Mr Patrick Ofori Anane, assemblyman for Kwamo, explained that with the exception of minor rehabilitation works where materials are supplied for projects through assembly members, most assembly-funded projects are awarded on contract. He said European Union (EU) projects are carried out with the active participation of the community with technical experts from the EU. Mr Anane was speaking at a durbar at Kwamo in the Ejisu/Juaben district to render accounts of his stewardship for the past four years. "All that the assemblyman does is to lobby for the approval and location of projects in his electoral area and ensure that the contractor concerned does a quality job, and mobilises the people for communal labour if the project falls under EU programme," he said. He said through the support of Kwamohene, Nana Osei Amoako Mensah, the second, levies from the residents and the assistance of the assembly, the community was able to complete a number of projects. They include the renovation of the Anglican primary school, the construction of a KVIP and the sinking of four boreholes. Mr Anane said the community is mobilising 150 million cedis for the completion of a community library and a day care centre as well as the rehabilitation of the community centre. The community accepted his accounts and assured him of its continued support for the development of the area.
