President John Dramani Mahama, who is also the National Democratic Congress’ flagbearer for the 2016 elections, on Tuesday presented highlights of the party’s manifesto to a cross-section of the public.

Although the party is set to officially launch the 2016 manifesto in the Brong Ahafo regional capital, Sunyani, on Saturday, the governing NDC wanted the public to get a feel of what to expect.

There were concerns raised by the opposition NPP about the intentional delay of the NDC’s manifesto, stating that the governing party had no ideas and was waiting to copy theirs.

The NDC’s General Secretary, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, however, said the party’s delay in launching its manifesto was strategic to enable the party trumpet its achievements.

The presentation which was done at the State Banquet Hall took about two hours.

The manifesto, according to President Mahama, is pivoted around four main areas namely; putting people first, strong and resilient economy, responding to social infrastructure and improving transparent and accountable governance.

Provision of electronic textbooks/tablets for students in high schools was paramount in the president’s address in tackling education as well as building centres for excellence in sports across the country.

Touching on health, the president promised to provide free NHIS subscription to persons with disability.

‘‘We’re going to increase the percentage of the district assembly’s common fund to provide free NHIS subscription to disabled persons in the various districts so that persons with disability if their sick can be able to go to the hospital because the subscriptions would have been paid for them,’’ he said.
