Kwesi,
Thanks for writing this delightful piece on this burning garbage heap rot some are trying seriously to douse and cover up with sand. I was amused by the PhD blues struggle. I sailed through the qualitative methodology which required written paper without tears, dropped out of the quantitative regression and correlation analysis which you only need to attend the lectures and get two vektall (points) in order to take another elective with intention to return for the 2 "free" points but never returned. Had my eyes not been opened by my being "lucky" to be taken as a research assistant into a real "Research" institute (in quote 'cos a visiting fellow from America claimed they were rather consulting for govts and international institutions and doing indep. research - reason why they took us on), I'd have walked into the PhD quagmire eagerly too. I saw that some of the snr researchers/consultants who had started either Dr Phil or PhD used to borrow a book titled "How to Get a PhD or Not to Get One". Something like that. I went to borrow it too. I scored negative on all the 5 questions one must ask oneself for wanting to get a PhD. That was the end of the road for me. Having been seeing and listening to top fellows from Asia to Africa through Europe to the Americas with decades behind them since they got their PhDs, and still regretting becoming academics and those on it complaining like in hell fire, it was easy for me to bet with one visiting fellow, a Head of Dept from S. Africa, that I wouldn't end up in any university or any research institute with a PhD.
Knowing what I know about the challenges of maintaining honesty, truthfulness and integrity in academia in the face of strong economic, social and political strictures, we must not relent in pursuing the authorities to take action to redress this situation whereby all of those values have been thrown to the dogs by some unscrupulous people.
As the two authors pointed out, it is a problem which is going to be a challenge to address in the future, so we must start now before it became an ulcer. With even adverts on Ghanaweb for BA, Ma and PhD theses and dissertations to be written for anyone who cares and is ready to pay, we are facing a new threat to academic excellence. Some sites even advertise transcripts and degree certs from any university of ones choice, all for a fee. No wonder we even had a quack parading as a medical doctor in their report. This is not only about SMC and UPSA.

So-called Apostle Dugbazah, You're clearly an idiot. PhDs are awarded for merit, as the result of painstaking intellectual endeavor in a field. Unlike calling oneself Apostle, a PhD candidate must actually prove to his examiners that he has put in the labor, the effort and has delivered a product that extends the boundaries of human knowledge and stands up to scrutiny.
It's only a know-nothing nitwit who calls into question the utility of PhD degrees in national development.

Akwasi thanks for this interesting piece. Dishonesty, laziness and cheating are becoming the staples of Ghanaians. These crooked ways are creeping into academia. I was shocked and saddened when first heard of the quest for Ph.Ds at IPS and those who use Dr. title even when these are Honorus Corsa conferrement. There is Dr. Joyce Aryee. Dr, IGP and recently read of the purported chase of doctorate degrees for business practitioner. Again, the balck man is easily cheated by these doggy foreign degree grantors who are making it their business to dupe gullible unintelligent Ghanaians. The least said about the NAB the better. Can't help but wonder their greed, corruption and sense of the implications of their sloppiness in accrediting these shady foreign institutions. Does anyone care about the country we are building? Who protects the young generation from the dubious degree granting institutions? Imagine how long it must have taken Ashesi to gain their full-fledged accreditation. This country is slowing sinking its reputation because even appointments to the NAB are reportedly not based on merit. These positions must be advertised and people selected on their merits. let not those who care so much about intellect sit idle to let the NAB ruin our human capital development.

Al academic degrees must be strenuously vetted especially those from private colleges and universities all over the world.
One of the candidates for one of the Parties and a lecturer at the University of development in the north had a doctorate appended to his name but upon research it turned out to be one of those unaccredited colleges and was even described as a bogus institution by the British government.

Hello:
Let us talk candidly about doctorates.
To my knowledge, there is a difference between the degrees being awarded by colleges of divinity and the traditional academic degrees awarded by mainstream universities. As well, there are the honorary degrees which are typical for persons who have contributed experientially in a field of endeavour.
Professional doctorates abound: EdD, MD, JD and others.
My question is simply this: why is the African so obsessed with degrees? I think this is the real cause of the denigration of the PhD. Can't African people see that degrees are the bane of their progress as far as applying valuable life-years is concerned?
When others are inventing, Africans are chasing degrees. When others are building, Africans are chasing degrees. When others are using their youth to gain valuable wisdom and experiential knowledge, Africans are chasing degrees. How come?
From youth, I have watched Africans come from all over to chase these degrees and fail miserably in life when it comes to applying themselves in other areas. These are areas where ethics, time and righteous self-development is concerned. These areas include marriage, child-rearing and even ON THE JOB experience.
In fact, I have noted that many African PhDs were and are sexually loose, arrogant, full of bigotry and cannot do anything very constructive in life except churn out meaningless jargon for their peers to read. These traits have nothing to do with the notion of what it means to a PROFESSOR of a doctrine of any sort.
Also, I want to know, when African students come abroad and their academic supervisors show them "pepper" by marking them down and subsequently turning them into parrots of Western modes of thought, do these African students understand how they next become agents of neocolonialism to be used by the West? I do.
Just some thoughts on doctorates.
Sincerely,
Apostle Mawuetornam Dugbazah
A degree is only as good as the mind that uses it for application of life skills. Otherwise, it is just a piece of paper.

We are extremely surprised at the Ministry of education and the Minister in particularly.I dont want to believe that this woman is the most laziest minister of education in the history of our country Ghana but considering the way she is handling UPSA issue,we cant think far.SMC even if accreditaed in the Switerland is still a deplorable school that no serious academic will opt for let alone a whole Ghana academia allowing one of its public university being manned any of its product.Worse of it is that SMC was not accredited is its home country but some unscrupulous individuals at ghana accreditation Board collected heavy bribes and accredited SMC garbage on ghanaians. Let me mae a contribution over here. there is a difference between PHD and DBA. PHD is for the academia whislt DBA is for industry. Business schools employ DBA scholars sometimes as instructors to enable their students learn from their practical experiences.their core job is not for the university academia but they can be employed to instruct that is institutional and programmatic accredited DBA. the real lecturing and management of a public university is for the Senior PHD holders with considerable length of experience after completing PHD which is not less than 15 years.the minister of education her self knew ,since she was one time vc herself. So the hell is wrong with her to allow this nonsense to be happening in UPSA. In fact all the lecturers over ther who gone SMC mill must be re assess before engaging them for any position of the university. The current council of UPSA is very deplorable and to be dissolved immediately likewise the national accreditation board.Ghanaians cannot accept unaccredited SMC doctors who are academically unfit to hold any position in any public university particularly UPSA unless their degrees be re conferred by the following schools ie UG,KNUST or UCC

A University of Professional Studies should have been thinking about some very experienced outsider of the Academic world for the position in order to bring a fresh approach to their mission to educate and research and train professionals for a developing economy. Instead they are, as is the practice in Ghana, inward looking. No suprise then that it should spout this nonsence about degrees.
When we have become "grown up" as a a country, search committees will hopefully lift their horizons, grow up, and look for eminent and well experienced people from outsiside of academia who will bring something different to the helm of leading these instituions and taking them forward.

Why what kind of journals does he publish in?? I also saw only two papers by Tsikata but I think the journal is a lower-tier one. Communicatio journal is a good but not ranked or indexed in ISI (web of Sci) which doesn't fit a top scholar with a quality PhD like Tsikata. Again, they should be honest in their research the next time. They should avoid bias in their sampling selection. Looking at the factual inaccuracies in this so-called research, I am tempted to say that this dishonest and factual inaccuracies runs through all the papers and the thesis Tsikata wrote. I have always been concerned about the kind of PhDs people are parading around in Ghana. I never knew the problem was so profound. To the extent that Alabi and co have turne a public university into a den of dubious degrees, we must blame the government of Ghana. I was expecting Alabi to say in his press statement that those degrees were not from Nicaragua and an unaccredited SMC. But all he did was to defend the rot. I am glad he has met his match and the two professors are combating and exposing them. If these professors were as fake as Alabi and his cohorts, am sure they won't get even kindergarten to teach in America. Let's turn things the other way round. Can Alabi and his criminals with Nicaragua degrees teach in even a community college In America? Who will employ these crooks with crooked qualifications. Soon we will be getting PhDs from Togo and the democratic republic of co go! Ghana is gone to the dogs!

Why call one Vice Chancellor and the other administrative head when both are Vice Chancellors? What's the meaning of that? Most Ghanaian writers are unintelligent.

I can only wonder what Evhes would do without degrees.
Hmmm, I wonder why Ghana even entertains PhDs when their lack of productivity and lack of genuine creativity is the real cause of Ghana's governance malaise.
