Drivers of MPs have called for the intervention of Parliament over allowance paid them by their bosses (MPs).
According to them, Parliament pays an amount of three hundreds thousand cedis to every sitting MP as driving allowance and MPs who drive themselves keep the allowance, however those who have drivers are obliged to give it to their drivers.
Regrettably though these stingy MPs pay their drivers as low as one hundred and fifty thousand cedis as their monthly salaries without any insurance benefits inspite of the fact that they have been travelling to their bosses’ constituencies every weekend.
In a petition addressed to the Speaker of Parliament, Honourable Peter Ala Adjetey, the drivers added that at times when they travel with their bosses they are compelled to sleep in the car whilst their bosses sleep in luxurious hotels.
The petition was copied to Honourable Owusu Adjepong the Majority Leader, Honourable Alban Bagbin the Minority leader, Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu the Majority Chief Whip, Honourable Doe Ajaho the Minority Chief Whip and Mr. K.E.K. Tachie the clerk of Parliament. It was signed by the following drivers: Kwasi Owusu, Andrews K. Wiemfo, Opoku Fosu Fred, Derrick Addo, Francis Abechiame, Kyeremeh Kwasi, Danladi Assah, Abuhenewa Jacob, Moro Mohammed, Sammy Yakubu, and others.
The drivers did not state the specific stingy MPs, but they are of the view that, even though they were not employed by parliament, it is incumbent on the Honourable house to know the treatment meted out to them by their employers, who are members of the house.
