Kumasi, Jan. 14, GNA- The University of Utah Medical Science Centre in Salt Lake City, USA, has donated surgery and anaesthetic equipment valued at 1.5 million dollars to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi.
The donation followed cooperation between KATH Medical School and the University of Utah Medical Science Centre, which began about five years ago.
A team of 30 medical specialists from the University are currently undertaking a week's medical services and training to staff of the hospital in anaesthesia, ophthalmology and general surgery. Presenting the items on Wednesday, Professor Devon Hale, Head of the team, said the university had been a pioneer in disseminating information on anaesthesia in the world.
He said hit had developed an association with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Medical Sciences to exchange knowledge and information on anaesthesia and other medical areas that would benefit both institutions.
Dr Anthony Nsiah-Asare, Chief Executive Officer of KATH, who received the items, said they would help improve the quality of health care delivery at the hospital.
Dr Nsiah-Asare said the collaboration between KATH and Utah, would offer opportunity to upgrade the skills of the staff at KATH. As part of the training programme, the team also organised a day's seminar on regional basis in anaesthesia for some selected nurses throughout the country at KATH.
It aimed at upgrading the skills of the nurses in anaesthesia management to enable them improve on their performance at various hospitals.
