Herr Gerhard Schr?der Arrives Today

The Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany, Gerhard Schr?der, is due in Ghana on tonight for a one day official visit on the final leg of his four day African tour.

He is on a seven-day-tour that has already taken him to Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa and today, he wraps up his African visit when he touches down on Ghanaian soil. His itinerary represents the East, Southern and West regions respectively of the continent.

It is the long-envisaged first tour of the African continent.

The tour started in Addis Ababa which is the seat of the African Union.

One of the main purposes of the tour is to make visible Germany's commitment to strengthening political change and sustainable development in Africa.

The trip is meant to intensify Germany's cooperation with the African Union, the sub-regional organizations and the African states that have embarked upon a wide range of reforms in their political and economic systems.

In Ghana, the Chancellor together with President Kufuor will participate in the opening of the Kofi Annan International Peace Keeping Training Centre.

The opening ceremony will be followed by bilateral talks between the Chancellor and the President John A. Kufuor on bilateral and international issues and the signing of an agreement on the rescheduling and reduction of bilateral debts amounting to approximately 9 million euros. A joint press conference of the Chancellor and President Kufuor will round up the visit of Chancellor Gerhard Schr?der to Ghana.

The Chancellor is accompanied by a high ranking delegation consisting of the Deputy Ministers for Foreign Affairs, Economic Cooperation and Commerce as well as Members of the Federal Parliament and the leading officials of the Federal Chancellery and the Federal Press Office.

A group of German journalists and high ranking business executives from the Federal Republic of Germany are also accompanying the Chancellor on his visit.

In this connection the Ghanaian-German Economic Association will be organising a Special Business Forum and Luncheon under the title "Doing business in Ghana "Chances and Challenges" on Saturday 24th January.
