Accra, Jan. 28, GNA- Mr. Kosi Kedem, NDC-Hohoe South on Wednesday said Parliament, "after more than ten years of existence has not been sufficiently moved by the plight of the disabled to perform its constitutional duties towards the disabled."

Presenting a statement on the floor of the house before the commencement of public business, Mr. Kedem said Article 29(1-8) of the constitution was devoted to the rights of disabled persons. "It is the same constitution, which has charged Parliament to enact such laws as are necessary to ensure the enforcement of the provision of the rights of the disabled persons.

Unfortunately, for some inexplicable reasons, Parliament has not been able to perform this crucial constitutional role."

The Member of Parliament said: "the disabled "can no longer wait ....fortunately, it has been proved beyond doubt that the disabled persons with little support can live a normal live." "There are many disabled persons in Ghana, who by dint of hard work have broken through the social barriers of life and have made a name for themselves as musicians, professionals, politicians and journalists." He, therefore, urged his colleagues to act now to help address the plight of the disabled.

Nana Asante-Frimpong, NPP-Kwabre, expressed the hope that Tuesday's demonstration by the disabled would focus greater attention on the need to do more for these groups of persons to get the Disability Bill passed into law.

Mr. Kwakye Addo, NDC-Afram Plains South who touched on the lack of user-friendly buildings for the disabled, said efforts must be made to ensure that buildings were accessible to these groups of persons.
