President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo should demonstrate in his maiden State of the Nation Address that he wants things done differently in order to put the country on the path of economic success, Dr Kojo Asante, a senior research fellow at the Ghana Centre for Democratic Development (CDD-Ghana), has said.

The president is expected to deliver his first sessional address to parliament in fulfilment of his constitutional duty, today Tuesday February 21.

He is expected to touch on how he will implement all the promises including the creation of one factory in each of the 216 districts across the country, the implementation of the Free Senior High School programme, reduction in taxes as well as job creation and several other promises he made to Ghanaians ahead of last year’s election, a poll his party won.

Speaking on State of Affairs on GHOne television on Monday February 20, Dr Asante said: “Maybe I am more informed so I can manage my expectations, but I think if the signals are right, if people feel that this is not the same thing that we have been doing, then they are going to sort of coil back into that cynicism. So for the Akufo-Addo government that is going to be critical, it is how you keep the right kinds of signals for people to go with you, so that is what I will be expecting.

“The address is going to be short but I want to see that we are actually going to turn the corner otherwise people will be sceptical.”
