League leaders Aduana Stars were denied a fourth successive victory when they were held 1-1 by WAFA SC on Saturday.

The draw, after victories in the opening three games of the 2016/17 Ghana Premier League, sees the Dormaa side extend their tally at the summit to 10 points ahead of 7 other games scheduled for Sunday.

WAFA, at their favorite Red Bull Arena grounds, started the game with blistering pace, stalking the backline of Aduana but the much experienced visitors contained the early pressure, playing second best.

While at it, Sam Adams sprang up with a moment of brilliance on 29 minutes. He controlled a pass from up left, chased his markers and succeeded in passing through their middle before firing home the opener from inside the box – 1-0.

WAFA’s unbeaten home run over the past two seasons came under serious threat as they struggled to break the guards of coach Yussif Abubakar’s men.

Aduana were forced into a first half substitution due to an injury suffered by forward Derrick Sasraku on 21 minutes. He had to pave way for Tanko Mohammed after failing to shake off an initial knock.

Komlan Agbegniadan and Prince Obeng each came close to fetching a goal for the hosts but they were denied by Stephen Adams who kept post for Aduana, his first in the campaign.

Aduana kept their 1-0 lead into the break but lost it just 4 minutes after the interval as Richard Lamptey got at the end of some intricate passing up the left flank. Lamptey got squared off by Majeed Ashimeru before firing a left-footer past goalkeeper Stephen Adams.

WAFA pushed further in search of the lead but the visitors who appeared content to be getting a point from the game contained pressure by slowing down the tempo of the game.

Aduana managed to keep the score 1-1 till the final whistle but it was WAFA who kept an impeccable record of 2790 minutes run without defeat at the Red Bull Arena.
