....as they welcome JJ

Ex-President Jerry John Rawlings arrived to a tumultuous welcome from his supporters Sunday night after almost three months abroad, with a call on supporters of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to declare 2004 a year of bold action.

‘Every one of us must prepare to light up our lamps in order to drive away the darkness which is engulfing Ghana’, he told the cheering crowd who were at the Kotoka International Airport to welcome him.

“We must hold onto our light to drive away the darkness the Kufuor regime is bringing to this country” he blared to the thunderous shouts of some of his fans, some of whom were off telling some visitors and foreigners of how the ‘real landlord’ was back.

“Shiatse dentse eba” (The real landlord is back) few kept on shouting in Ga whilst others kept on saying same to visitors who wanted to know why the crowd had thronged the Airport.’

Speaking of recent media reports on the number of houses he owns, the former President said ’Rawlings does not own any house or home anywhere like these people’ and that all those stories are mere fabrications.

Amidst chanting of ‘we want JJ back, we want JJ back’ from the charged supporters, he said he is a very busy man who has been visiting a number of countries consulting people as well as institutions about the way this country is going about its developmental programmes.

The police had a hectic time controlling the almost 3000 very musical supporters carrying placards some of which read

  • ‘JJ, you are a political maestro of Ghana’
  • ‘Kufuor leave JJ alone’
  • ‘JJ is back, no vulture meat’
  • ‘NRC your hall is a small place for JJ’
  • ‘NRC cross examine JJ at the independence square’ and
  • ‘You touch JJ, you burn Ghana’
The crowd included a number of NDC dignitaries, including the Hon. E. T, Mensah of the Ningo Prampram constituency, ex-NDC General Secretary Huudu Yahaya, and Hon. Dr. Benjamin Kumbuor of the Lawra-Nandom constituency.

Rawlings, who arrived on a British Airways flight from the UK around 7pm, did not however speak on the National Reconciliation Commission (NRC), which had announced its decision to serve him a writ on a case before them as soon as he arrived in Accra.

He did not also speak on today’s much expected appearance of former National Security chief, Capt (Rtd) Kojo Tsikata, at the NRC on an issue over which Rawlings himself is also expected to be subpoenaed on - the June 1982 abduction and murder of Justices K. A. Agyepong, Mrs. Cecilia Koranteng-Addow and Mr. S. P. Sarkodie - kidnapped together with Major Sam Acquah, a retired army officer.

Tsikata, known formally to friends as “Gbagbladza”, (the cockroach) and Rawlings have been fingered by various witnesses who have appeared before the NRC over the four murders though both men have consistently denied their involvement in the affair.
