Nsuta (W/R) Feb. 11 GNA- Mr. Jurgen Eigendaal managing director of the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC) at Nsuta near Tarkwa has assured the new board of directors of the Ghana Railway Company (GRC) of his company's support to improve railway transportation in the country. He said for the past five years, GMC had spent more than 2.5 million US dollars for the repair and maintenance of railway tracks to enhance the haulage of manganese to the Takoradi port.
Mr. Eigendaal told newsmen after a management meeting with members of the GRC board on Monday as part of the board's two-day inspection of tracks and facilities of the GRC.
He spoke of plans to procure additional wagons to enhance the haulage of manganese, and said the two companies would work in close cooperation to ensure a brighter future.
Mr Joseph Sam Appiah, chairman of the GRC board described GMC as one of the customers of GRC that it would rely on to ensure a turn around in its operations.
He gave the assurance that the new board would ensure the rehabilitation of tracks and facilities of GRC to eliminate inefficiency.
At the Tarkwa Railway station, members were shocked to find that the ticket department had been turned into sleeping places for lunatics, destitute and miscreants.
Sergeant Robert Donkor of the Railway Police station told the members that the station had become a den for thieves and social misfits and controlling them had become a problem due to the small number of personnel at the station.
Mr. Joseph Sam Appiah, leader of the team ordered the removal of all unauthorised structures at the station.
