Human factor cannot be ruled out as the cause of recent road accidents that have led to loss of lives, Chief Superintendent Simon Tenku, Public Relations Officer of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, has said.

Mr Tenku’s comment comes on the back of a twin accident that happened on Sunday 12 March in the Central and Brong Ahafo regions leading to the death of a total of 19 people.

Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Monday 13 March, he told show host Moro Awudu that road accidents claim more lives than is estimated.

According to him, investigation into the twin accidents was underway.

“Even though we are not in a position to actually pinpoint where the fault is actually coming from, preliminarily you can still see the human factor we still talk about. Could it be…speeding? Could it be unnecessary overtaking? Could it be recklessness on the part of the principal characters who happen to be the drivers? I’m not doing any conclusive judgment here but we can all see the human influence in some of these preventable accidents,” Mr Tenku stated.

He added: “Investigation is underway…and we think it has been highly unfortunate as we’ve been mentioning every time – road accidents seem to be taking more lives than we think.”
