Former President John Dramani Mahama has sent his best wishes to President Akufo-Addo following the latter’s appointment as Co-Chair of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Mr Akufo-Addo succeeds Mr Mahama, whom he defeated in Ghana’s December 2016 polls to become president, as Co-Chair. And on Tuesday April 11, Mr Mahama took to Facebook to congratulate his political rival.

“I wish President Akufo-Addo, my replacement as Co-Chair of the UN SDG Advocates, the best of strength, focus and vision as the Advocates work to enhance the gains made towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals,” the ex-president wrote.

Mr Mahama and the Prime Minister of Norway, Ms Erna Solberg, were in January 2015 named as Co-Chairs of a group of 16 eminent SDG Advocates to support the Secretary-General in his efforts to generate momentum and commitment to achieve the SDGs by 2030.

The SDGs, adopted by world leaders at the United Nations Sustainable Development Summit on 25 September 2015, represent a commitment by all nations to work together to end poverty, achieve shared prosperity, build peace, and secure a life of dignity and a healthy planet for present and future generations.
