Demonstration by staff of New Times Corporation publishers of Ghanaian Times over poor conditions of service and managerial incompetence is worrying, the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has bemoaned.
According to the angry staff, their acting managing director Carol Annang is managing the company into the abyss.
“We are suffering at the New Times corporation. Our conditions of service are bad. The managing director has not fulfilled her promises, everything has come to a standstill,” the leader of the protesting staff told Starr News’ Emmanuel Gbikpo who monitored the demonstration.
She added: “We pay 117,000 to graphic to print our papers every day, that huge amount is paid to them every day just to print our papers. Things are not working for us here at Times, we have appealed to them to reduce the cost of printing at graphic but they are not listening to us.
“News-Times Corporation is like a gold mine but they are not managing it well. They are creating the impression as though things are working well, but how can you rebrand and still go and print your paper with a competitor?” She further noted that workers of the company have not received salary increment for the last seven years.
Speaking Monday September 18, 2017 on Morning Starr, the president of the GJA, Affail Monney described the situation at Ghanaian Times as acutely worrying. “We are overly concerned about what is happening in New Times Corporation because it plays a significant role in the media industry,” he told Morning Starr host Francis Abban.
He said leadership of the GJA will deploy a delegation to the New Times Corporation to ascertain what is happening there.
“This morning we will head to New Times Corporation to get first time information about what is happening and we will also meet our constituents and talk to them to exercise patience and calm with the authorities and look at how best we can resolve the issue,” said Mr. Monney.
