The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has removed unauthorised structures close to Achimota Old Station.

The exercise, which took place last Friday, was at the behest of the Accra Mayor, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, and forms part of the assembly's initiative to rid the city of illegal structures and the President's vision to make Accra the cleanest in Africa.

The Mayor of Accra cautioned all those selling on pavements and roads in the metropolis that their activities were contrary to AMA Street Hawking bye-laws 2011, adding that hawking in the middle of the road was against the bye-laws, as well as the Road Traffic (Amendment) Act, 2008(Act 761) Section 29(2).

The Mayor appealed to the hawkers on the pavement to vacate the place immediately to pave way for pedestrian and vehicular movement. He urged all residents in Accra to be law abiding and work hard to make the capital safe, clean and beautiful.

He also expressed concerns over the unauthorised parking of vehicles on pavements and roads, especially by mechanical shops and garage owners, and admonished them to desist from such practices and remove all vehicles from the shoulders of roads.

Mr Sowah assured that the assembly would follow due process in the discharge of its duties.
