The Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has indicated it will soon calibrate all meters by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to ensure uniformity in billing.

Dr Opoku Edusei, Deputy Director General of the GSA explained that meters procured from different countries always have different readings hence the likelihood of customers paying different amounts for the same volume of consumption depending on where the meter was imported.

“We have been calibrating hospital devices, fuel pumps. So, calibration of ECG meters is also one of the areas that we will be venturing into so that the complaints that came in the past in places like Somanya where people were complaining of overbilling will be minimal,” he told Moro Awudu on Class91.3FM’s Executive Breakfast Show on Monday, 6 November.

His comments follow complaints of power users of high bills at certain times.

The GSA said it will soon start the exercise after it reported earlier that out of 22 electrical cable brands sampled and tested in the laboratory, only two, which were manufactured locally, passed the critical safety requirement standard for conductor resistance.

The nationwide surveillance revealed that more than 70 per cent of all imported electrical cable brands on the market were substandard and could cause fires.
