AMA, BIGRS donate road safety tools to MTTD

AMA BIGRS items donated include 200 LED light batons, 200 reflective vests, 100 traffic cones and others

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in partnership with Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS), has presented some road safety enforcement equipment to the Motor Transport and Traffic Directorate (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service to aid in the reduction road fatalities.

The items comprise 200 LED light batons, 200 reflective vests, 100 traffic cones, 70 mounted directional signs, 50 rain coats and 2 boxes of latex gloves.

100 Reflective vests, 100 LED light batons, 50 Rain coats were also presented to the Metro Guards who assists the MTTD in controlling traffic on the streets of Accra.

The Mayor of Accra, Mohammed Adjei Sowah, assured the MTTD of the Assembly’s support in ensuring road safety as he urged all Road Safety personnel to work without fear or favor.

“It is recommended that enhanced enforcement, driver education and stricter laws such as reduced alcohol limits for young and novice drivers are encouraged to combat the incidence of drunk-driving and their associated traffic injuries in Accra.

As we enter into the festive season I task the MTTD to utilize the breathalyzers and additional accessories being donated today, in a sustained and relentless manner to rid our roads of drivers who choose to drive under the influence of alcohol,” he said.

The AMA boss also opened a three -day training course for MTTD personnel on ‘Road Side Checks for Drink Driving Enforcement’ by BIGRS at the Accra City Hotel and urged “participants to take advantage of the international best practice training workshop to develop effective enforcement strategies to eradicate drink driving, and in so doing save precious lives from dying needlessly.”
