Trainees of the Accra, Tamale and Ho Schools of Hygiene are boycotting school today, Monday, 4 December 2017 as part of efforts to pile pressure on government to restore their allowances.
This follows a demonstration last week during which the students impressed on the Akufo-Addo administration to fulfill a 2016 campaign promise to have their allowances restored.
They further gave the Sanitation Ministry a two-day ultimatum to act on their petition or face an intensified action.
In a jointly-signed statement by the three SRC Presidents to declare their boycott, the students explained that the move has become necessary owing to the frustration and psychological instability caused them by the government’s deliberate neglect.
Speaking to Class News, SRC President of the Accra School of Hygiene, Samuel Agyiri, said the authorities have deliberately ignored their calls.
“This strike action is to push the government to attend to us because it looks like whatever we have been doing, they’ve kept mute.
They don’t want to reply, they don’t want to talk to us, they don’t want to say anything so we the students of hygiene in Ho, Tamale and Accra are embarking on this strike to push the government and for that matter the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources to attend to us because it looks like we are the only health training institution under that ministry…
“They should attend to us now. Ever since we submitted the petition, none of the ministers or higher authorities have responded.”
