A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has asked Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia to take frantic steps to arrest the Cedi as it has depreciated against the dollar in the first year of the current government, the former claims.
Abraham Amaliba, a member of NDC’s legal committee, says Dr Bawumia’s claims in the first 100 days of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration that the Cedi is under arrest no longer holds due to the state of the country’s economy.
Dr Bawumia in a townhall meeting organized by Multimedia Group to mark NPP’s 100 days in office took pride in the ability of his government to have taken hold of the local currency, stabilising its movement, as it were.
“When we came in, [the Cedi] was running, essentially we have arrested it and the IGP has the keys,” he said at the meeting in April. “He’s locked it up. We want to make sure we pursue sound policies to keep the Cedi stable. It has appreciated for this year.”
But speaking on TV3’s New Day on Saturday, Mr Amaliba stated that the Cedi appears to have broken gaol. “I am telling [Dr Bawumia] that the [Cedi] is a fugitive. He should go for it. “Mr Vice President go and look for the [Cedi].”
The private legal practitioner said most Ghanaians are disappointed in the performance of the NPP and they cannot wait to kick them out in 2020. He said the NDC did far better than the NPP is doing, especially in the face of the latter’s government size.
“We expected that a government that puts in place 110 ministers would have done better. But statistics show.”
He was insistent that the current government has destroyed almost everything the John Mahama-led government did, in the name of bettering it. He was hopeful 2020 will see the return of the NDC to right the wrongs being perpetrated by the NPP.
