A random survey conducted by the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority, DVLA, has revealed about sixty percent of drivers in Ghana drive without license.
Most of them, especially commercial drivers, use borrowed licenses. The Eastern Regional Director of the DVLA, Eric Addison Bentil, disclosed this at the Annual General Meeting of the GPRTU at Koforidua.
He said the Authority has put measures in place to register all drivers through the paperless registration process which requires fingerprint, a picture and an authenticated national ID card.
The Regional Director of the National Road Safety Commission, Paul Yirenkyi, said drivers must observe the road safety rules and advised them to undertake regular checks of shock absorbers and every essential part of their vehicles before embarking on a journey.
The Eastern Regional Chairman of the GPRTU, Rev.Johnson Kyireh, stated that activities of drug dealers are gaining root in the various stations and asked the Branch Chairmen to be vigilant and bring culprits to book.
The National Chairman of GPRTU, Frank Kwame Kumah, impressed on the Union Chairmen to ensure all vehicles are in good condition before allowing drivers to use them.
He advised the drivers to avoid speeding, overloading, overtaking and drunk driving and to channel their grievances through their Regional Offices to the National for redress.
