Contrary to the impression created by some functionaries in government that the appointment of former Attorney General and Minister of Justice Martin A.B.K Amidu will nib corrupt activities in public institutions in the bud, the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces has called on such persons to slow down on their anxiety.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Flagstaff House in his second media encounter revealed that his appointment will not provide all answers to dealing with corruption in the public sector.
He was however hopeful it will erase the erroneous impression of partisan prosecution in view of the fact that he is a leading member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC)
“ I am well aware of the general sense of anxiety in the country and the strong feeling that politicians tend to get away with corrupt practices. A significant choice, though, that Mr. Amidu is, I do not expect that he will provide all the answers for dealing with the phenomenon of corruption by public officials, but I do believe that, at the least, the Office will help remove the fear of partisan prosecution”
President Akufo-Addo who was skeptical about the appointment of Martin Amidu ending corrupt practices in public institutions is however hopeful that his appointment will be used as a measure in instilling the fear of God in public office holders.
“I do believe that, at the least, the Office will help remove the fear of partisan prosecution, and begin to put the fear of God in all public officials who are intending to go down the path of corruption”, he stressed warning “Just in case it needs reiterating, let me state again that current office holders are as likely to be investigated and prosecuted by the Special Prosecutor, if a case is made out against them, as past office holders. At all times, the rule of law must be adhered to”.
