The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has ordered the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) to compensate affected prepaid customers who were unable to purchase electricity units from December 3 to December 12 last year.
Affected areas such as Achimota, Korle-Bu, Dansoman and Kaneshie are expected to receive compensation payment from the nation’s power distribution firm by March 1, 2018.
In a statement signed by PURC Executive Secretary Mami Dufie Ofori, ECG is expected to compensate the customers for the inconvenience caused them.
“ECG has therefore been ordered to pay compensation to its affected customers for loss suffered as a show of good customer service.”
The compensation is based on the average energy lost to each customer category as a result of the prepayment failure for 10 days.
In December 2017, some customers of the four areas were unable to purchase prepared units due to what the ECG said was caused by a hitch in its servers.
For over a week, prepaid customers were unable to buy the units which led to the closure of some businesses due to the unavailability of electricity for their operations.
The situation led customers to join long queues at some ECG offices in an attempt to buy electricity units.
This led to confusion at some of the offices, leaving some people injured and others collapsing as a result of the huge numbers.
