The children are fed with boiled maize by the caterers assigned to the school
Pupils of Sisipe D/A Primary School in the East Gonja District of the Northern Region have in the last couple of weeks been fed with boiled maize by the caterer who has been assigned to the school under the Ghana School Feeding Programme.
The situation is not any different from Matilapo Primary School which is said to have angered the Chiefs and people of the area who demand that the caterers of these schools are either withdrawn and the meals improved or both.
According to a section of the community members, the boiled maize is served twice a week which they said was not the case in the past wondering why their wards will be subjected to eating malnourished meals in the wake of their already poor situation.
“The maize is prepared for them every Tuesday and Thursday and it has neither oil nor pepper and contains no nutritional value” they lamented to mynewsgh.com reporter who visited the community to ascertain things for himself.
In a week, six bowls of rice are shared among two schools Sisipe and Matilapo primary which has the same caterer with no fish to cook for the over 200 pupils who are served a ladle of the white rice rich in only carbohydrates.
“Our children don’t go to school on Tuesdays and Thursdays because of the maize they cook so they always go with us to the farm which is not right” a worried parent revealed.
They pleaded with the MCE for the area Mr. Mohammed Tamimu to change the caterer with immediate effect or face the wrath of the community who may do the unthinkable.
The Chief of the area disclosed that he has summoned the DCE and the Coordinator about the incident but none has responded.
Several attempts by this portal to speak to the Northern Regional Coordinator for the Ghana School Feeding Programme, Felicia Tetteh about this worrying trend futile as he refused to pick her calls and failed to respond to several text messages.
The National Coordinator of the Programme, Dr. Kwame Adu-Nsiah, when however reached on phone, promised to call the zonal coordinator about the development and revert.
But at the time of going to the press, he was yet to respond and indicate actions taken to resolve the situation and whether or not the demands of parents in the area have been met.
