Environmental Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies, is demanding for practical solutions and not excuse to the current water shortage situation facing the country.

Their demand is coming as officials of Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) face parliament, today, Tuesday, 6 February 2018, to answer questions on the water crisis situation in the country and solutions in place to address it.

Today’s appearance will be the second after an initial one on the matter could not produce a forward-looking solution.

The current crisis has been attributed to heavy pollution as well as the dry season, forcing residents of affected communities to trek long distances in search of water.

Reacting to this development in an interview with Class News, president of Friends of Rivers and Water Bodies, Nana Dwomoh Sarpong, charged the GWCL to proffer practical solutions and not excuses to the problem as they looked on unconcern when river bodies were being destroyed.

He said: “When their dams and catchment areas are being encroached they don’t do anything about it so they are part of the problem and they should solve it.

“If they say it is hopeless, how did we get here? I think somebody must be questioned, somebody must be responsible, we cannot accept this excuse and when people who are supposed to fix the problem come and give us excuses, don’t they know that God naturally in his wisdom always warn us that when is dry season the volume of water in rivers decreases and when it is rainy season, it goes up, so it’s telling us that if we don’t take care of water it can dry up and they know it.

“We told them the fresh water is their raw material so they should protect it, guide it, prevent people from destroying it, if you don’t do that, one day, it will affect all of us and this is what [is happening now] only for them to come and explain, we won’t accept any explanations.”
