Former Attorney General and Special Prosecutor nominee, Martin Amidu, says Ghana is not a “milking cow” for people to take advantage of and loot from the public purse.

Answering questions on how he intends to fight corruption in the country at his vetting Tuesday, Mr. Amidu said he intends to establish “strong institutions” and employ independent investigators to be able to succeed.

He however declined to give details, stating he could not do so because he was not yet approved by the Appointments Committee of Parliament.

Mr. Amidu told the committee whether approved or not, he would “continue to fight [corruption] for this country”.

He observed that corruption has in time past caused the stabilization of the country, and recalled instances under the PNDC era where people were executed by firing squad for corruption.

“It’s important that this country is stabilized to make sure that no one gets the excuse to stage a coup. This can be done when we protect the national purse,” Mr. Amidu said.
