Security expert Dr. Kwasi Aning has described as unfortunate government’s new strategy to deal with the rising spate of robberies in the country.
Government on Thursday announced that it is unleashing a combined team of military and Police personnel onto streets to counter the movement and operation of robbers.
“Government has also deployed a surgical operation based on intelligence…to flash out criminals and suspected criminals. “Operation Calm Life’, which is the joint anti-armed robbery military and police operations has been enhanced with immediate effect. In this regard there will be heavy military and police presence in our major cities across the country starting from today.” Information Minister Mustapha Hamid said at a press briefing Thursday.
The move follows the increasing pace at which robbers are attacking in broad day light, especially in Accra.
So far about 40 robberies have taken place in the country since the beginning of the year.
In the most recent attacks, one person was killed and huge sums of monies stolen after robbers struck in Accra and Tema in broad daylight within two days.
Speaking to Starr News, Dr. Aning who had warned against deploying the military, said the approach by government is hasty.
“I think the approach is hasty, it is ad hoc, and it is just to assuage the fears of the general public. I think it is rather unfortunate. You going to put soldiers on the streets, people should not use siren and all, it is laughable. We a need a grand national security framework within which policing philosophy sits”.
