Zoomlion Ghana Limited (ZGL), a waste management company, has assured the newly created Districts that it would train personnel responsible for environmental sanitation management to lift the nation from filth at the District level.
Mr John Sackey, the Upper East Regional Coordinator of the ZGL, said this when he delivered a goodwill message, and donated 30 waste bins and 10 motorised tricycles to the newly created Bolgatanga East District at the inaugural ceremony at Zuarungu.
He said the on-going Sanitation Modular Courses that were being run by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) would be structured to take care of skills development, and added that “I wish to assure all the new Municipalities and Districts that you will have your fair quota at the training programme.”
Mr Sackey said the company was also increasing the number of mechanical and other technical workshops to enhance prompt maintenance of MDAs’ fleet of sanitation vehicles to enhance waste collection and transportation.
He said the Kumasi Compost and Recycling Plant (KCARP) which was 80 percent complete would be operational by the close of the year to support waste treatment.
The Coordinator added that the core functions of the District Assemblies under Section 12(1)(b) of Act 936 was to “promote local economic development in collaboration with the private sector.”
“It is in pursuit of this grassroots partnership relationship with the private sector that over the past 12 years, Zoomlion has had the privilege of partnering all the 216 Metropolitan and Municipal District Assemblies (MMDAs) to manage environmental sanitation issues,” he said.
Mr Sackey said the cordial relationship established between Zoomlion and all the MMDAs had helped them to mutually work towards various sustainable environmental sanitation programmes and used the opportunity to thank them.
He said the Company had over the years introduced various modern waste management technologies and equipment which included manual and motorised tricycles, compaction, Roll-On-Roll Off and Skip Trucks among others as part of measures to clear the nation of filth.
“This was done to get the ordinary workers’ hands on the processes to demystify waste management. In recent times, we have introduced recycling and composting and innovations that add value to the resource that we call waste,” he said.
He said ZGL was committed to ensuring that maximum attention was given to environmental cleanliness at the local level and assured that “we will support the newly created Municipalities and Districts to set their Sanitation Departments as appropriate.”
