Professor Kwesi Yankah, the Minister of State in-charge of Tertiary Education, has outlined some measures government is putting in place to lessen the plight of private universities.

He said government would help address challenges that private universities face in relation to the acquisition of presidential charter and affiliation.

The university named one of the blocks at the main campus in Miosto after Prof Kwesi Yankah at a ceremony.

Prof Yankah, who was speaking at the send-off party organsied by Central University for him after serving almost five years as Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the university, said “the attempt to set the private universities free started when I was Vice Chancellor of this university. I should make a move that would be of significance not just to Central University but liberate all private universities from oppression.”

He cited the 25 percent tax waiver to private universities as one of the moves to improve their operations.

Chancellor of Central University, Rev Dr Mensa Otabil, described Prof Yankah as a ‘man of peace who has good working relationship with everyone.

“We bring him back not only to say thank you but to show him love and the depth of our appreciation,” according to General Overseer of the International Central Gospel Church (ICGC).

He expressed gratitude to Prof Yankah who helped the university to acquire charter after several years.

Dr Otabil also lauded the Minister of State for shaping national discourse during the military regime in Ghana through his popular column dubbed, ‘The Voice of Resistance AKA Abosom Fireman’ in the Catholic Standard published by the Catholic Church.

“We hatched plans to address many difficulties. We took important decisions that affected students, faculty and staff during the process to acquire a charter,” the Chancellor recalled.

He was optimistic the symbolic gesture of immortalising him would be appreciated by all.

Prof Bill Buenar Puplampu, the Vice Chancellor of the university, on his part, thanked Prof Yankah for instituting the Distinguish Lectures Series that offered the platform to numerous personalities, including Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, to discuss national issues.
