Labour Consultant Austin Gamey has said the superiors of the two pregnant fire officers who were sacked due to their pregnancy, must be made to pay the GHS100,000 compensation as ordered by the court.

Grace Fosu and Thelma Hammond were dismissed for getting pregnant within the first three years of their service.

An Accra High Court on Thursday, 26 April 2018, ordered the Ghana National Fire Service to reinstate them and also pay all arrears due them from the time of their dismissal.

Presiding judge, Justice Anthony K. Yeboah, stated that the regulation on which the Ghana National Fire Service dismissed the two, is discriminatory.

Reacting to the issue on 5o5 on Class91.3FM, Mr Gamey said the ruling should serve as a lesson to all institutions.

He said: “I think they should count their stars blessed that they have been asked to pay only GHS100,000 for all that they’ve done; it’s a very shameful thing and I hope they will never repeat it.

“If I were to be in charge of that ministry, I’d ask them [those responsible for sacking the two women] to explain why they should not be made to pay? The state is going to pay, so, it appears it doesn’t matter to them, but it should be of concern to all of us because it is going to be your tax that will be used to pay. I hope this lesson will be learnt by all of us.”
