An event to officially outdoor the 25th anniversary celebrations of Goldfields Ghana was held on Monday, May 28, 2018 at the headquarters of the mining firm in Accra.
The company since its inception in Ghana in 1993 has made giant strides in the mining sector and also contributed significantly to the development of the country.
The year-long celebration will focus on rewarding loyal workers of the company and also see the company undertake developmental projects in some of the mining communities in the country.
Addressing stakeholders at the external 25th Anniversary celebration launch, the Executive Vice President of Goldfields Ghana, Alfred Baku recounted how the company started in the early 90s and commended present and past workers of the company for their efforts in making it the nation’s premier mining firm.
Mr Baku also mentioned some of the successes chalked by the company in the last 25 years and also highlighted some of the development projects that the firm has embarked on which he contends has ‘touched the lives of people’.
“Please permit to highlight a few of our key achievements and milestones in the course of our journey in Ghana. Operationally, we have turned a low grade mine like Tarwka into a flagship mine that delivers returns to shareholders including the government of Ghana. The Damang mine which was on the verge of collapse was given a fresh breadth of life with a 1.4 billion dollars approved by the board in 2016. Our Tarkwa and Damang mines have created over 7, 000 direct and indirect jobs annually. Even with a conservative multiply effect calculation, we positively impact the livelihoods of between 70, 000 and 100, 000.”
“Our communities have been direct and major beneficiaries of our social support and the company has spent approximately 44 million dollars in these communities in providing access to portable water, supporting our local farmers, putting up health and educational facilities, training our community youth, building critical infrastructure and extending bursaries and scholarships to bright but needy children”, he narrated.
He however expressed his appreciations to individuals who have contributed immensely to the growth of the company.
The event was graced by the South African High Commissioner to Ghana, Lulana Xingwana, the President of the Ghana Chamber of Mines and other distinguished personalities from the mining industry.
