Fifty suspected illegal immigrants mostly Nigerians, including a female, have been rounded up by the intelligence directorate of the Ghana Police Service at Gomoa Budumburam in the Central Region.

Forty-six laptops, mobile phones and assorted electronic gadgets were also retrieved.

The suspects were believed to have engaged in various criminal acts including cyber-related crimes and robberies.

The Thursday morning swoop was informed by weeks of intelligence on crime trends in and around Kasoa.

The suspected foreign nationals, the police alleged, have rented several apartments in the area from where they plan and launch their nefarious activities.

They are also to be investigated for residence permit and other travel violations.

Personnel from the Police Intelligence Directorate swooped at the targeted areas in Gomoa Budumburam around 9.00am.

About 20 suspects were rounded up in the first apartment, which is a two-bedroom facility.

Most of the suspects were reportedly busy doing stuff on their laptops whilst others were sleeping.

By the end of the swoop, three such facilities were stormed and the 50 suspects including a female were rounded up.

The exhibits are to be referred to the Cybercrimes Unit of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID) for further investigations.

The suspects were screened. They are expected to be handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for residence status investigations.

Those found culpable for any criminal act after the investigations would be arraigned before court.

Those with illegal migration status would then be repatriated from the country

Meanwhile, 21 out of the 46 suspected foreign nationals rounded up in a similar exercise two weeks ago at Ngleshie Amanfrom are to be repatriated by GIS for illegal immigration.

According to the Director General of Police Intelligence Unit of the Ghana Police Service, COP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, criminal activities within Kasoa and its environs have gone down tremendously since the first operation two weeks ago and pledged to sustain the exercise to rid the areas of criminals.
