Eleven people have been confirmed dead in a gory accident Wednesday dawn on the Suhum-Nsawam highway
A Medical superintendent of the Suhum government hospital is blaming lack of street lights on the Accra-Kumasi highway as major cause of accidents.
Dr.Emmanuel Ashong briefing journalists in the wake of a fatal accident that claimed eleven lives at Asuboi- Mankrong a suburb of Suhum said poor visibility on the highway can be said to be major cause of accidents.
A total of eleven passengers died while 53 others sustained severe injuries when two KIA Grand Bird buses collided head- on at Mankrong in the eastern region.
One of the buses with registration number, GN 6600-17 reportedly overtook a vehicle ahead and crashed into the bus with registration number GS 835 -16 travelling from Kumasi direction of the stretch to Accra.
Officials from the police and fire service were at the scene to retrieve bodies from the wreckage.
Suhum district police commander,Superintendent Joseph Owusu explaining cause of accident blamed the drivers for over speeding and unnecessary overtaking.
At the Suhum government hospital, officials from the hospital and the ambulance service were seen attending to accident victims.
Most of these victims suffered head injuries and fractured arms and legs while those with severe cases were transferred to the regional and St .Joseph hospital in Koforidua.
Hospital medical superintendent, Dr.Emmanuel Ashong attributes rampant accident to poor visibility.
" streetlights should be fixed on that stretch because when driving, especially at night, visibility becomes a problem and records show that most of these accidents have been happening at night hours. At day time the road is very dangerous. The best they can do to reduce or curb it is for them to bring street lights'. He lamented.
Meanwhile, officials the national road safety commission has been visiting the hospital to have first hand information on the incident.
National boss of the commission, May Obiri Yeboah expressed worry about the fact that many of these accidents are occurring on what she describes as good roads.
" The drivers over speed on that road and it's all because the road is motorable, if it was bad they wouldn't over speed for these accidents to be occurring. The drivers must be careful and observe road safety regulations so that accidents won't occur frequently ". She explained.
