Former Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien has furiously refuted reports that players boycotted games at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, four years ago.
The ex-Chelsea star stated that whoever ‘cooked’ up the story of the stars threatening to boycott their game is very stupid.
Four years ago, it was reported players had planned to boycott games if their appearance fees was not paid. The team was due to play Portugal in the final group game and the players had threaten they were not going to play that game leading to government airlifting $ 4 million to Brazil for them to be settled.
According to him, the match was an official match and the Black Stars were in no position to threaten their officials of boycotting any official game organised by Fifa.
“Does it make sense now? It happened four years ago and we just have to leave it behind and move forward,” Essien told GNA Sports.
“They should wait to hear our side before they criticise. You don’t criticise us and after four years they want to hear our story. The story is dead now so let’s move forward.”
“Nobody wanted to boycott the matches. It is official game and so we would not play. So whoever came up with that story is very stupid to be honest with you.”
